I Believe the Holy Spirit Reveals God’s Word and God’s Will

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

Hebrews 1:1

Watch Week Six Day Three

God is a God who speaks. This might seem like a rather obvious point that we could just safely assume. But it is no small thing that the God of the universe desires to communicate with us. We see throughout Scripture that the Lord desires to reveal Himself to us and be known by us. What does that tell you about God’s character and purposes?
Today we will explore how God speaks through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Speaks through the Prophets

As the Nicene Creed says, the Holy Spirit has spoken through the prophets. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s people are lost in rebellion, turning from the Lord. But God sends the prophets, people like Isaiah and Ezekiel, to call the people of God back to the Lord and His ways.

Hebrews 1:1 says, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways” (NIV). Reading through the writings of the prophets, we find the Spirit leading them. As the Spirit of the Lord comes over the prophets, they are able to speak the word of the Lord to the people. The prophets also “spoke of the grace that was to come” (1 Peter 1:10 NIV). As Peter said, the prophets, “searched intently and with greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow” (vv. 10_11 NIV).

Today, the Holy Spirit continues to speak, giving us the guidance and direction we need.

The Holy Spirit Speaks Guidance and Direction

We all have questions: God, what should I do about this decision? How should I respond to these circumstances? God, what is Your will for my life? For today? We all have questions as faith communities as well. Among many other questions, we ask, “God, how are You leading us deeper into your mission?” “How are we to be faithful in our context?” “How should we handle this situation together?”

In His love and mercy, God does not leave us alone with those questions. The Holy Spirit speaks guidance and direction to us. In Scripture we see the Holy Spirit leading people. We see this throughout the books of Acts, where the Holy Spirit directs the ministry of the early church. Ordinary people are guided by the Spirit of God. As the apostle Paul said in Galatians, we are to walk by the Spirit (5:16).

Now, this is not just for the super spiritual among us; all of us followers of Christ are to be led by the Spirit of God who lives inside us. As we saw last week, it often begins with a very simple prayer: Holy Spirit, lead me.

The Holy Spirit illuminates Scripture for us. We are able to understand the Scriptures because the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom. The Holy Spirit’s wisdom and revelation is never contrary to God’s Word. We can trust the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth. First Corinthians 2:9–10 says, “But, as it is written ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.” God has revealed His truths to us through His Spirit. As 1 Corinthians 2:12 mentions, we have received God’s Spirit so that we might understand the things given to us by God, the good news of Jesus Christ.

Each and every day as long as I can remember I always loved John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” ‭‭John‬ ‭16:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬. I also love and always ask the Holy Spirit in my prayers especially when reading ir listening to God’s Words Luke 24:45 “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24:45‬ ‭NLT‬‬. I sometimes say ok this is what I think he is saying and sometimes not. I feel totally clueless and I so ask my Heavenly Father please help me as I am desperate for you and lost without you. Am I on the right path Lord am I doing what you want me to be doing? Where do I fit in? Please baptize me in your Holy Spirit and let me see a glimpse of your works in my life and to know I am headed in the right direction. I need you every hour I need you. There is no condemnation to those who belong yo Christ Jesus. Why is this so hard please pour down your grace and mercies upon me and let me know, it’s all good!
