Lord, when we slow down to think through what Christmas really means, we can’t help but marvel that You would leave perfection to come save us. You didn’t have to, but You wanted to. Your love brought You into our broken, messy world—a fragile newborn, swaddled and napping in an animal trough. Ultimately, that same love brought You to the cross, where You poured out Your life for us. Deep down, we know that some aspects of these truths are too wonderful for us to ever fully understand, but it is good for us to sit with them.
Thank You for this fixed point in our year that helps us remember. Forgive us for forgetting, for letting the splendor of the incarnation grow fuzzy and fade into the background of our lives. It is too wonderful to forget. Help us keep You at the center of our thoughts as we move into this next year.
